Cemeteries are vibrant windows into a community’s background and priorities. In the US and many parts of Europe, families are buried together in family plots that are fenced off. In France and New Orleans, the dead are buried in mausoleums and above-ground crypts. In Mexico, they are placed in the ground without a coffin, with a small shrine placed over the head. Tombstones in Budapest are elaborate, almost competitive statements of a person’s wealth and personality.
